Canna Lily Sales Face A Chaotic Future

Many agricultural plants that are reproduced by vegetative division face a mysterious problem that results in a decline in the clone vigor, and most farmers and nurserymen claim that the plant crop has "run out." A number of factors adversely affect the plant clone to the point that it becomes unproductive and uneconomical to continue growing.

A technique has been discovered that has revitalized the agricultural crops such as strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, sweet potato, banana, and a newcomer: the canna lily. This flower bulb or rhizome is facing present and future disastrous consequences unless governmental regulatory steps are taken to correct the dilemma facing the canna lily industry. Since the 1940s, canna lily rhizomes have been continuously commercially grown from the original stock that could easily be harvested in the fall, packaged and resold by Dutch mailorder companies (few exist today, most went bankrupt) as named varieties. Commerce developed so extensively around the success of selling millions of these rhizomes that some farmers began to cultivate canna lilies in fields, planted in rows like corn, exclusively for the Dutch mailorder companies. For some canna growers in the states of Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, the financial rewards were so excessive, that they began to plant hundreds of acres as an exclusive agricultural crop. Because of a shift in business retailers a decade ago, when the canna lily sales were shifted away from packaged rhizomes of mailorder companies to the potted, growing, blooming canna lilies for spring and summer sales by boxstores such as Walmart, Lowes, and Home Depot. The boxstores bought their potted products mainly from contracted nursery growers, purchased as dormant, canna lily rhizomes from the exclusive field grown canna farmers who originally supplied the mailorder companies just a decade ago. This dramatic change from selling dormant canna lily bulbs to trusting mailorder customers to the customers at box stores, who observed the plant flowers and leaves before purchasing, has made it necessary for box stores to reject many of the inferior potted canna lilies, that had over the years declined (run out) to a state of unpredictability. This rejection had not occurred to mailorder customers who were buying an unseen, untested rhizome with a "wish" that it grow into that beautifully-pictured dormant plant that was packaged for sale in the mailorder catalog.

Growing canna lilies for retail sale has now become a crisis much like the one that threatened the growers of strawberry plants, raspberry bushes, blackberry bushes, and banana trees years ago.

The canna commercial growers proceeded each year to set aside part of the current canna rhizome crop to use as seed for renewal planting the following season. As growing continued each year, certain genetic defects and susceptibilities began to appear and accumulate and grow more seriously each year. The canna farms continued regrowing and selling more and more diseased and mutated canna rhizomes each year, until they can be viewed with horror in full bloom and the distorted flowers and ratty leaves by the contrast the buyers at the stores and the retail customers. Many of these canna varieties were originally grown and sold as true to name varieties. After many decades of vegetative reproduction, the canna crop has become a mixture of harmful and inferior mutations susceptible to many diseases, insects, nematodes, and flower abnormalities. Commercial growers of cannas practiced a technique that they called "roguing" that involved searching through rows of cannas in full bloom and discarding those that appeared to vary visually from the desired variety intended to be grown. This technique only worked partially, because many of the weaknesses and inferior qualities could not be visually determined, such as canna rhizomes that failed to bloom at the time the farmer decided to "rogue" the canna fields. Additionally, the genetic factors that were mutated into the rhizomes that made the plant susceptible to diseases and other impediments would not be seen, since the commercial fields were normally sprayed effectively to remove pests; however, the normal home gardener does not expect to buy a plant that must be continuously sprayed with fungicides, nematode treatments, or for insects, and as soon as their potted plants are placed in the home garden, the leaves are exposed to the assaults of the leaf rollers, and the webworms, and the rhizomes become infested with the ravages of the nematodes. This disenchantment of retail buyers and admirers of cannas is expected to drastically curb the future purchases of canna lilies.

Plant decline in such agricultural products as strawberry plants, raspberry plants, blackberry plants, sweet potato vines, and banana trees has been approached and largely overcome by the process of tissue culture. Plant scientists have discovered that the rapidly growing tip of a plant called the "apical meristem," can be removed and placed into a tissue growing medium. The plants from which the apical meristems are removed are carefully selected to reproduce and must conform to the original desirable characteristics of the parent cultivar. The apical meristem grows so rapidly that by carefully selecting the few cells at the tip, virus and other mutation problems are left behind to result in a new plant that is vigorous, disease-free, and fast growing.

This group of cells grows into a complete plant with a shoot and root system intact, that are collectively called "nuclear stock mother plants." These "mother plants" are used to divide vegetatively from which commercial, private sector nurseries are permitted to sell certified plants to farmers that are free of virus, bacteria, and other diseases.

As of August 1, 2006, no suggestion has been made to restore the canna growing industry from its present chaotic disposition by the use of tissue culture technique. Tissue culture could restore the reputation of marketing and production of canna lily rhizomes to a satisfactory acceptance level of approval by both wholesale and retail customers.

And now that many of them are available as container-grown plants that can be bought in flower, it's really just a matter of choosing the flowers you like.

Nevertheless, it's nice to know exactly which plant you're dealing with, so that you can be sure of its performance and size. While most of the larger nurseries and garden centres take care to supply plants that are true to type, make sure on first flowering that your cherries match their label descriptions. Misidentification, or perhaps misrepresentation, is common.

Plants

Prunus subhirtella cultivars and hybrids
Although the flowers of Prunus subhirtella are usually small and fairly simple, they appear from early winter well into spring, depending on the cultivar. Not only that, the cultivars themselves are long-flowering, often being in bloom for three weeks to a month. There are many cultivars, but most are similar to, or forms of the two main types listed below.

'Autumnalis' ( 'Jugatsu Sakura')
This is the most reliable winter-flowering form. It often starts to bloom in late April to early May and can carry flowers right through until mid September. It seldom produces a massive burst of bloom, rather sporadic clusters of flowers. This is just as well because the flowers are damaged by heavy frosts. The flowers of 'Autumnalis' are white to pale pink opening from pink buds; those of 'Autumnalis Rosea' are the same but with a deep pink centre.

'Pendula' ('Ito Sakura')
Prunus autumnalis tends to have weeping branches and 'Pendula' is a cultivar that emphasises this feature. Its flowers are usually pale pink and open in late winter to early spring. 'Falling Snow' is a cultivar with pure white flowers, while those of 'Rosea' are deep pink.

Sato-zakura hybrids

'Fugenzo' ( 'Shirofugen' )
'Fugenzo' was one of the first, if not the first, Japanese cherry to be grown in European gardens. It 's origins can be traced back to at least the 15th century. Its flowers are white to very pale pink, opening from pink buds, and when fully open how two conspicuous green leaf-like pistils in the centre of the flower.

'Taihaku'
'Taihaku' , also known as the great white cherry, has white flowers up to 5cm across. It grows to at least 8m tall with a wider spread and its flowers open at the same time as its bronze foliage expands, making a pleasant contrast. Thought to have been lost to cultivation, this cultivar was identified in Sussex garden from an old Japanese print.

'Ukon'
Although 'Ukon' mean yellowish, this cultivar has very distinctive pale green flowers and is one of the few unmistakable cherries. Its foliage develops purplish tones in autumn. The unusual flower colour contrasts well with the likes of 'Sekiyama'.

'Amanogawa' ('Erecta')
'Amanogawa' grows to around 6m tall, but only around 1.5m wide, and has pale pink single flowers with a freesia-like scent. It blooms in mid-spring and in autumn the foliage develops striking yellow and red tones.

'Shogetsu' ('Shugetsu', 'Shimidsu-zakura')
'Shogetsu' flowers late and produces pendant clusters of white, double flowers that open from pink buds. The flower clusters are up to 15cm long, which makes a tree in full bloom an arresting sight, especially considering that 'Shogetsu' is not a large tree and that its weeping habit means it can be covered in bloom right down to the ground.

'Sekiyama' ('Kanzan')
Certainly among the most popular cherries and most often sold under the name 'Kanzan', 'Sekiyama' has a relatively narrow, upright growth habit when young but eventually develops into a spreading 12m tall tree. Its flowers, which are pink and very fully double, are carried in pendulous clusters of five blooms. They open from reddish-pink buds. The foliage has a slight red tint.

'Ariake' ('Dawn', 'Candida')
This cultivar grows to about 6m tall and flowers in spring as the foliage develops. The young leaves are a deep bronze shade that contrasts well with white to very pale pink flowers.

'Kiku-shidare' ('Shidare Sakura')
'Kiku-shidare' is similar in flower to 'Sekiyama', but it has a weeping growth habit. It is a small tree and is often smothered in bloom from the topmost branches down to near ground level. The flowers can each have up to 50 petals.

'Pink Perfection'
'Pink Perfection' was introduced in 1935 by the famous English nursery Waterer Sons and Crisp. It is a probable 'Sekiyama' × 'Shogetsu' hybrid and has flowers that show characteristics of both parents; the clustered blooms of 'Shogetsu' and the pink of 'Sekiyama'. The flowers are very fully double and the young foliage is coppery.

'Kofugen'
'Kofugen' has graceful semi-weeping branches and a fairly compact growth habit. Its flowers are not really single but semi-double, though the two whorls of petals are flat rather than ruffled, so the effect is not that easy to see.

'Shirotae' ('Mt. Fuji')
This beautiful tree has a spreading growth habit that in the best specimens shows distinctly tiered branches. Its flowers, which are white and semi-double on mature plants, start to open before the foliage expands. They are pleasantly scented.

'Takasago'
Although possibly a Prunus × sieboldii cultivar, 'Takasago' is now more widely listed under the satozakura cherries. It bears clusters of semi-double pink flowers with bronze-red new foliage.

'Ojochin' ('Senriko')
This tree, rather squat when young, but eventually 7m tall bears single white flowers in such profusion as to give the impression of double blooms. Opening from pink buds, the flowers are up to 5cm in diameter and among the later to bloom. 'Ojochin' means large lantern, which aptly describes the shape of the flowers.

'Accolade'
One of the most popular of all garden cherries, 'Accolade' is a Prunus sargentii × Prunus subhirtella hybrid that develops into a flat-topped small tree. In spring it is smothered in pendulous clusters of large, bright pink, semi-double flowers.

Well-known as an avenue tree, this Prunus subhirtella × Prunus speciosa hybrid is smothered in white to very pale pink blooms in spring before or as the new leaves develop. Sargent's cherry (Prunus sargentii)
This large and very hardy Japanese species is probably best known as one of the parents of the very popular hybrid 'Accolade'. It can grow to as much as 18m tall and will withstand at least -25°C. Its 3 to 4cm wide, bright pink flowers are complemented by red-brown bark.

Kurile cherry (Prunus nipponica var. kurilensis)
Usually little more than a large shrub, this Japanese cherry can reach 6m tall under ideal conditions. The flowers, which are soft pink and open from early spring, are backed by red sepals that hang on for a while after the flowers have fallen, thus prolonging the spring colour.

Prunus × sieboldii
This brid has given rise to several popular cultivars. The original cross is a slow-growing small tree with semi-double 3 to 4.5cm wide flowers in spring. The new stems are often very glossy.

Flowering cherries are largely undemanding plants that thrive in almost any well-drained soil. For the best display of flowers they need to see at least half-day sun and if sheltered from the wind, the blooms and the autumn foliage will last far longer than if exposed to the full blast of the elements.

Sawfly larvae (peach or pear slug) sometimes cause damage to the foliage, and older plants sometimes suffer from dieback in their older branches, but these are seldom serious problems. The dieback is sometimes the result of Armillaria, so it may be advisable to insert some of the now readily available Trichoderma dowels into the trunks of any older cherries to prevent the problem developing.

Propagation
Virtually all of the fancier flowering cherries sold for garden use are budded or grafted, usually onto Prunus avium stocks. Although few home gardeners attempt them, these processes are not difficult. Budding especially, is straightforward and is carried out in exactly the same way as budding roses.

Species, including the standard Prunus avium stock, can be raised from seed or from softwood cuttings taken in spring or early summer. The seed should be removed from the fruit by soaking for few days until all the flesh has fallen away. It is usually best to simulate winter conditions by chilling the seed for a few weeks before sowing.

Graft height
When buying flowering cherries you may be faced with a choice of graft height. Which you choose largely depends on the cultivar and the type of growth best suited to your garden. With weeping cherries choose the highest graft possible (usually 8ft [2.4m]), to allow the maximum length of flowering branch. Upright cultivars like 'Sekiyama' are best grafted near ground level so that their erect habit has a chance to develop properly, while graft height in not that important with bushier trees.

The important thing to remember, particularly with high grafted plants, is that the main stem will not gain much height from the grafting point. The stems of a weeping cultivar may grow up before arching down, thus adding some height, but if you choose too low a graft that won' t make much difference. Low-grafted weeping cherries are, however, ideal for large tubs where they can be kept trimmed to shrub-like proportions.

My blooms are smaller, leaves are showing signs of wear and tear and yet the rose gardening I do now will be crucial to the success of next years growth. Lets call it rose gardening insurance.

The last rose show is over, the days start getting shorter and the children are back in school but as rose growers we still have work to do. The four most important tasks of fall.

Pick and Clean
Stop fertilizing and start your clean up. From the beginning of September on, there is no need to fertilize your rose beds and pots because you do not want to encourage new shoots to develop as winter approaches. This is also the period of the highest incidence of mildew problems such as blackspot so it is time to pull away all leaves that show signs of disease and to rake the beds below to remove all traces of the blackspot or mildew spores. Yes, they overwinter so get rid of them with your garbage. Deadhead, keep the beds scrupulously clean and pick away at the damaged leaves.

Re-consider your Spray program
Continue spraying if you want clean leaves and blooms into early fall but put away your spray equipment as your rose bushes begin to go into dormancy. Leaves are beginning to curl and drop, rose hips grow darker in color and no new shoots are developing. These are the signs that your rose bush is slowly moving into the dormant stage and the the "do not disturb 'till spring" signs are about to go up.

If you want to spray with dormancy spray, usually oil and sulfur, wait until December or January when your bushes are fully asleep, otherwise store your spray in a dry, safe place and take a close look at how successful you were this season and whether you could cut down or at least be more aware of the environment. You should have pruned your old growth roses or any that only bloom but once a year. Your climbers should be pruned to shape now and tied in to train them to grow in the right direction and shape for next season.

Miniatures can be cleaned of wayward shoots or broken stems and given a short haircut.
Leave the serious pruning until spring, just be prepared for the winter storms.

Plant or re-plant for the next year.
Now is the time to plant your bare root roses in preparation for spring growth. It is also a very good time to move roses and to re-plant them.

Always plant with good, new soil with compost or manure added, but do not add nitrogen based fertilizers at this time of year. A cup of bone meal would help with root growth.

Bare root roses should be soaked in warm water for eight hours before planting to re-constitute them immediately following delivery to your home.

Don't forget to mound up all your rose bushes with soil to protect the crown from winter winds and the possibility of drying out. This protective mound will be slowly removed as the air temperatures warm up in the spring.

As you go into winter and your rose bushes go dormant remember that any rose gardening actions taken now will have a great effect on what happens in the spring.

Even in the Pacific North-West I have had the occasional rose bloom at Christmas and if you do it should be in a clean rose bed on a bush pruned and mounded up for winter protection.

FLOWER ICE BOWL CENTER PIECE:

You will need:

assorted spring flowers...or just one kind
greenery (optional)
water
masking tape
2 glass bowls with a size difference of 2 inches

Place a few of your flowers on the bottom of the larger bowl. Place the smaller bowl in the larger bowl, on top of the flowers. Fill the space between the bowls, slowly, with water. Using a skewer to push them down into the water, add the rest of your flowers in the space around the bowl. Secure the smaller bowl in the larger bowl using the masking tape. Wrap the tape tightly across the top of the bowls, making sure that the smaller bowl is centered. Freeze at least 4 hours, or overnight. Remove from freezer and let stand for 5 minutes. Gently pull smaller bowl and remove your ice bowl from larger bowl. Put it in the freezer until you are ready to use it.

You can use these ice bowls to serve; salad, custards, fruit, sherbert, or you may fill it with fresh flowers and use it as a centerpiece.

This is also great for other seasons. Just change the type of flower and greenery to fit the season!
